BDO Administrators Seek Buyer for Falkirk Landfill Operator
Avondale Environmental’s hazardous waste services continue during sale process

Avondale Environmental Limited, which operates the Avondale Quarry landfill and waste facility in Polmont, Falkirk, entered administration on 2 September 2025 amid rising costs and mounting cash flow pressures. James Stephen and Kerry Bailey of BDO LLP have been appointed as joint administrators and are exploring options.
Trading as Avondale Landfill, the company has provided waste treatment and disposal services since 2000, including hazardous and non-hazardous landfill, contaminated soil treatment, asbestos disposal, and renewable power generation from landfill gas. The business is recognised by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and local authorities as a key provider of hazardous waste processing and environmental management across Scotland.
The company employs 19 staff, most of whom are based at the Polmont site. Administrators confirmed they are supporting employees while continuing operations to maintain critical waste services. Affected staff were told the administrators are seeking expressions of interest from potential buyers “as soon as possible.”
Despite a long record of profitability, Avondale has been squeezed by inflationary cost pressures, weakening demand, and delayed infrastructure projects. For the year to 31 March 2024, the company reported turnover of £23.5 million, down sharply from £33.4 million a year earlier. Post-tax losses narrowed slightly to just under £1.1 million, with fixed assets valued at £13.5 million, current assets at £35.9 million, and equity of about £30 million.
“The company has historically been profitable and provides unique services in the sector, in particular with regard to hazardous waste,” Stephen said. “We are keen to engage with interested parties as soon as possible to explore this opportunity.”
The administrators will continue to assess restructuring and disposal options in the coming days while engaging with stakeholders and regulators to safeguard environmental obligations at the quarry site.
