Burnham shelves Thames Water administration plans over costs

The government has paused plans to place Thames Water into a special administration regime amid concerns over taxpayer costs that could exceed £2 billion, potential legal challenges and estimates that an 18-month process could cost as much as £4.1 billion, while officials continue to assess alternatives for the utility as it grapples with nearly £20 billion of debt and warns it could run out of cash by year-end.
