Energy bill debt hits £6bn

Energy UK says domestic energy debt reached a record £6 billion in the first half of 2026 and could rise to £7 billion by year-end, with more than 3 million customers in arrears, adding pressure to supplier balance sheets and prompting renewed calls for Ofgem and the government to accelerate debt relief measures as unrecoverable customer balances increasingly threaten sector financial stability.
