Government moves to acquire Speciality Steel UK

The UK government is working towards the public acquisition of Speciality Steel UK after concluding that it could not support the preferred private-sector bid emerging from the liquidation process. The former Liberty Steel business has been in compulsory liquidation since August 2025, and its sites in Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Brinsworth and Wednesbury support more than 1,300 jobs. The government said a public acquisition would preserve options for the sites, including continued speciality steel production, advanced manufacturing and future private investment.
