VG Mathers collapses after nearly 60 years

VG Mathers Limited, an Aberdeenshire haulage business founded nearly 60 years ago, entered liquidation on 2 September 2026 after rising operating costs and pressure on cash flow left the company unable to continue trading.

Michael Reid, head of insolvency services in Scotland at MHA, was appointed liquidator. The Kintore-based company ceased trading before the appointment, resulting in the loss of seven jobs.

Founded in 1968 by Vic Mathers, VG Mathers provided road haulage services as well as vehicle inspections and repairs. The business was most recently led by director Colin Mathers, the founder’s son.

Mathers said the company had faced sustained pressure from higher fuel prices, insurance premiums, regulatory compliance costs and vehicle maintenance expenses. While the business had sought to absorb those increases, he said their cumulative effect restricted cash flow and ultimately made continued trading impossible.
